What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, known as eyelid surgery in the medical literature, is a surgical procedure that aims to correct signs of aging and functional problems around the eyes. This operation, which is one of the most common procedures of modern aesthetic surgery, aims to both eliminate cosmetic concerns and improve the quality of vision. By organizing excess skin, fatty tissue and muscle tissue in the upper and lower eyelids, the person is provided with a more vigorous, youthful and vibrant appearance.
Blepharoplasty plays an important role not only in terms of appearance but also in solving vision problems caused by droopy eyelids. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is a procedure performed by experienced plastic surgeons, can be performed under local anesthesia, and is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is a more complicated procedure and can be performed under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia is generally preferred for patient comfort. Correct patient selection, detailed preoperative evaluation and determination of the appropriate surgical technique are critical in achieving successful results.
Eyelid aesthetics is a part of the procedures called "periorbital rejuvenation" in the aesthetic surgery literature. Periorbital rejuvenation literally means giving the eye area a younger appearance.
Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a surgical procedure performed to remove signs of aging around the eyes and improve the quality of vision. This operation can be performed on the upper and lower eyelids and both eyelids can be treated at the same time.
During the operation:
- Excess skin and fat tissue accumulated in the upper eyelid is removed
- Bags in the lower eyelid are corrected
- The muscle tissue around the eyes is repositioned
- The position of the eyelid is corrected if necessary
Especially lower eyelid surgery requires a lot of experience in this field. If it is not performed properly, the possibility of complications called ectropion or scleral show increases. If these complications do not improve with the recommended massages, a secondary surgery may be needed.
Lower eyelid blepharoplasty can be performed in two ways: transconjunctival (incision on the inside of the eyelid) or transcutaneous (incision through the skin, 1-2 mm below the eyelashes). Both techniques have advantages and disadvantages. The physician decides which technique to use in the patient.
Upper and lower eyelid aesthetics can also be performed together with almond eye (lateral canthoplasty). This procedure is also called fox eye, dimond eye or cat eye.
Since facelift procedures do not affect the periorbital region, eyelid aesthetic surgeries are very often combined with face lift. Combining it with rhinoplasty (nose aesthetics) is generally not recommended because nose surgeries cause edema around the eyes and prolong the postoperative healing process. Brow lift surgery is not recommended to be performed in the same session because it will cause a change in the upper eyelid, but this combination is possible in experienced hands.
The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes an average of 1-2 hours. The surgeon follows the natural folds of the eyelid and makes incisions with minimal scarring. In this operation using modern techniques, personalized plans are made by taking into account the patient's facial anatomy and expectations.
After this procedure, patients are usually discharged on the same day and can return to their normal lives in a short time. If both eyelids are operated on at the same time, overnight hospitalization may be recommended. The success of the operation is directly related to the experience of the surgeon and the attentive care of the patient during the recovery period.
